Kitchener Utilities Smart Thermostat Rebate Application

A $75 on-bill credit will be applied to your bill when you replace your existing thermostat with a smart thermostat model. If the purchase price of the thermostat is less than the $75 rebate amount, only the purchase value will be applied as an on-bill credit.

Criteria and eligibility for the smart thermostat Rebate

All criteria outlined for this rebate must be met to qualify:

  • Replace existing manual or programmable thermostat with a smart thermostat model. The existing thermostat cannot be a smart thermostat model.
  • Customers applying for the Kitchener Utilities Smart Thermostat Rebate must provide a copy of the sales receipt/invoice. If the application is incomplete or proper documentation is not submitted at the same time, this may result in a delay and possible denial in receiving the rebate. Submit your application online or email us for another method. 
  • The premise must be a single detached home, semi-detached home, or row townhouse.
  • The primary heating system must be a natural gas furnace or boiler.
  • One rebate per address/utility account.
  • Rebate is available to City of Kitchener residential properties and must be a Kitchener Utilities natural gas customer with an active gas meter and account.
  • Kitchener Utilities may follow up with you to confirm the necessary details around the installation.
  • Occasionally, a qualiied service technician from Kitchener Utilities may be required to inspect the installation(s) of the thermostat to confirm the rebate application. If the qualified service technician from Kitchener Utilities is denied access for inspection, this may result in a delay and possible denial of the rebate.
  • Approved rebates will be applied as a credit to the registered owner’s utility account where the thermostat is installed. If no utility account is applicable, then a cheque will be mailed to the registered owner.
  • Customers will be notified if the rebate is denied.
  • Rebate is effective January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024. Smart thermostat must be purchased during this time. Not applicable to smart thermostats purchased prior to the program start date.
  • Rebate program is subject to change or cancellation at the discretion of Kitchener Utilities. Limited funding is available. Updates will be provided on the Kitchener Utilities website if the program is cancelled.

Personal information is being collected under the authority of s. 28(2) of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) and will be used for the smart thermostat rebate program from the City of Kitchener. This information will be shared with staff who require it for their work as part of Kitchener Utilities and will be stored on a server owned by a Third Party Service Provider (eSolutions Group) located in Canada. The personal information collected herein will be used only for the purposes relating to the program and will be protected in accordance with the requirements stipulated in the MFIPPA.
