Notes about the Community Garden Program - Insurance
1. The City of Kitchener provides mandatory insurance for community gardens on City-owned land.
2. Premiums per plot and per community garden group must be paid in order for the insurance policy to become active. The City will be covering these costs.
3. This insurance policy provides $2 million in liability with a deductible to be paid by the City in the unlikely event of a claim.
4. In order to retain insurance coverage and use of the community garden, Community Gardeners must follow the items prescribed in the Community Garden Agreement including Appendix A, The City’s Rules for Garden Use. Garden coordinators are required to complete monthly safety checks that are to be submitted online.
5. The insurance policy covers your legal liability for bodily injury to or damage to property of others such as spectators, passersby, property owners and others resulting from your activity. (subject to standard exclusions and conditions set out in the policy wording).
6. The liability policy does not provide benefits for medical expenses incurred as a result of an injury sustained by an insured member, while participating in a sanctioned insured activity.
7. The liability policy may protect you in the event of a lawsuit against claims of bodily injury or property damage.
8. Insurance coverage only applies to the activity and dates disclosed on the permit application.
9. To obtain a copy of the full insurance policy, please contact the Neighbourhood Development Office, (519) 741-2663 as policy conditions apply.
