Summary of public education offerings

Kitchener Fire Grade One Fire Safety Presentation

Kitchener Fire Department is pleased to offer a Grade One Fire Safety Presentation designed to introduce young students to important fire safety concepts in an engaging and interactive way.

During this approximately 30-minute presentation, a Public Education Officer will talk about their role in the community and the many ways they help keep residents safe. Students will have the opportunity to learn about firefighters and see a demonstration of the protective firefighting gear that firefighters wear when responding to emergencies. This helps children recognize that, while firefighters may look different in their gear, they are there to help.

Fire safety education will also focus on the importance of working smoke alarms. Students will meet Sniffy the Smoke Alarm and learn what smoke alarms do, why they are an important part of every family's home safety plan, and how they help protect families by providing early warning of fire.

Firefighters will discuss the actions children should take when a smoke alarm sounds, including the importance of leaving the home immediately and going to a predetermined family meeting place outside.

Presentations are held in the school's gymnasium and are offered once per school, per school year. Through this program, Kitchener Fire aims to help students build confidence around firefighters while developing lifelong fire safety habits.
