Marriage licence appointment request

Currently, appointments are being booked for Monday to Friday. Spaces on these dates are limited. You may be required to go on a waitlist for a specific date, however we will do our best to ensure you get an appointment.

To ensure safety and appropriate physical distancing, limited spaces are available on each appointment date. Marriage licences can be issued up to and including the date of your wedding; therefore, requests for appointments will prioritized by wedding date, and acceptance of eligibility criteria defined below. While all requests for an appointment will be reviewed, a request using the form below does not guarantee an appointment; you will be contacted by staff to confirm your appointment date and time once your application has been reviewed and meets the eligibility criteria (see below).

At this time, there are limited spaces available on each appointment date. We understand that you may be anxious about getting a marriage licence while city facilities remain closed – please be assured that we are committed to ensuring that you will receive this important legal document in time for your special day. Marriage licences can be issued up to and including the date of your wedding. 

Request an appointment

Please complete the form below to request an appointment. The date of the wedding must be included on the application. Please try to apply at least 60 days in advance of your wedding, if possible.

We will review all applications, but appointments will be prioritized by the date of the wedding, as noted above. Your request for an appointment will be reviewed by staff and eligible applicants will receive a confirmation email from Licensing Services with:

  • your appointment date and time
  • instructions for day of
  • a list of all original documents, including payment by debit, cheque or money order only, required on the appointment date

If your wedding is cancelled for any reason, including as a result of COVID-19, you will need to resubmit and repay to obtain a brand new marriage licence with the new wedding date. If you need to cancel your appointment, please notify us as soon as possible.

Please note if the information provided is incorrect, or any documents are missing your appointment date/time will not proceed. We will notify you of this and you will need to resubmit your application to be reviewed. If your health status changes after submitting the form and prior to your confirmed appointment, please notify us so that we can reschedule.

Marriage Licence Expiry Extension

Due to COVID-19, the Province of Ontario has changed some licence expiry dates. See the table below for dates.

If your issuance date gives you an extended expiry date, you do not need a new licence for postponed weddings if no critical information has changed.

  • critical information includes: legal name or marital status
  • critical information does not include: wedding date

Please hold onto your original licence. 

Marriage Licence Replacement

If you have purchased a marriage licence between December 1, 2019 - July 22, 2020, but have lost or damaged the licence, you may be eligible for a replacement licence. A request for an appointment is required and the cost of a replacement licence is $79. If you purchased your original licence at a municipality other than City of Kitchener, you will be also required to submit a consent form as part of the "request an appointment".  This form will allow us to contact another municipality to validate the date and licence information of the original licence.  As this requires additional steps, there may be a delay in receiving confirmation for an appointment. Please ensure you apply well in advance of your wedding.
